Emanuel Navarrete and O’Shaquie Foster are in advanced talks for a fall junior lightweight unification fight that would also crown a new Ring Magazine champion at 130 pounds.
Mike Coppinger of InsideRingShow reported Monday that negotiations have progressed, with the bout expected to take place later this year if an agreement is finalized.
The matchup would pit two of the division’s reigning champions against each other in one of the strongest fights available at 130 pounds. Navarrete would bring his IBF and WBO titles into the ring, while O’Shaquie would defend his WBC belt. In addition to the two world titles, the winner would also be recognized as The Ring champion.
The proposed bout matches two contrasting styles. Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs) has held the WBO title since moving up to 130 pounds and would be seeking another unification victory in a career that has already seen him win world titles in three weight classes. Foster (25-3, 12 KOs) regained the WBC belt and now has the opportunity to add a second major title if the deal is completed.
While contracts have not yet been finalized, the talks represent a significant step toward making one of the division’s most anticipated fights. If completed, Navarrete vs. O’Shaquie would unify two world titles and determine a new Ring Magazine champion in a matchup that has been discussed as one of the premier contests available at junior lightweight.
