Benn has not stopped an opponent since his second-round win over Chris van Heerden in April 2022. His five subsequent fights have covered 56 rounds, producing four decision wins and one decision loss. He dropped Chris Eubank Jr twice in the final round of their rematch, showing that he can hurt an opponent, but the fight still reached the scorecards.

That record supports Malignaggi’s boxing argument without proving anything about the testing case. Benn carries enough power to get an opponent’s attention, but Malignaggi does not consider it heavy enough to compensate for the difference in skill or prevent Garcia from waiting on the counter.

Benn Must Survive Garcia’s First Counter

Benn’s usual pressure may bring him directly into Garcia’s most dangerous punch. He tends to attack in straight lines and does not always disguise his entry with feints, head movement, or a jab. Garcia needs only a small opening to release the left hook while Benn is stepping toward him.

Such a punch is harder to see than a hook thrown during a stationary exchange. Benn will be moving into its force, increasing the damage while reducing his time to react. Malignaggi does not expect Garcia to overwhelm him with a long combination. He sees one fast counter changing the fight.

Returning to 147 pounds adds another concern. Benn has not made the welterweight limit since 2022. He boxed Chris Eubank Jr twice near the middleweight limit and weighed 149½ pounds against Regis Prograis in April. Those extra 2½ pounds do not sound substantial, but removing them after several years at higher weights may affect his stamina, reactions and ability to absorb Garcia’s counters.

A change in approach can make the entry less predictable. Feints and lateral steps would make it harder for Garcia to time the left hook. Repeating the same straight attack gives the faster puncher a clear target.

Ryan also creates opportunities once the distance closes. He often retreats in straight lines with his chin raised when placed under pressure. If Benn can reach his chest without absorbing the first counter, he can drive Ryan toward the ropes and force him to fight at close range.

Close quarters favor Benn’s physical style. He can attack the body, use his shoulders, and keep Garcia from setting his feet. Garcia’s defense becomes less reliable when an opponent prevents him from controlling the punching distance.

The difficulty is getting inside repeatedly. Garcia had roughly 200 amateur fights, while Benn’s amateur career consisted of only about 20. That difference gave Garcia far more time to learn distance, rhythm and shot selection before turning professional. Benn has gained experience during his professional career, but adjustments under pressure may still favor the fighter with the deeper foundation.

Targeting the body may help take some speed from Ryan. Benn will need patience rather than immediately reaching for the head once exchanges begin. Reckless pressure gives Garcia exactly the rhythm Malignaggi believes will produce the knockout.

Motivation and concentration remain the qualification in Malignaggi’s pick. Garcia has delivered different versions of himself based on his preparation and mental state. The focused version possesses enough speed, timing and power to expose Benn’s defensive openings.

Surviving the initial counters would make the contest more favorable to Benn. Ryan can lose discipline over 12 rounds, tire from repeatedly loading up and grow frustrated when an opponent refuses to break. Benn’s work rate and physical pressure then become more valuable during the later rounds.

Toughness alone will not protect Benn during the first exchanges. Garcia does not have to be the busier fighter or hold his ground for the full distance. One repeated aggressive entry may be enough to bring the counter Malignaggi expects.
