Ryan Garcia Gets Eight Ounce Gloves Against Benn

Ryan Garcia will get the eight-ounce gloves he wanted against Conor Benn after both fighters came in comfortably below the 147-pound limit for Saturday night’s bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Ryan registered 145.5 pounds, while Benn came in at 146. That eliminates the controversy over a proposed glove waiver and puts both fighters’ physical condition under greater scrutiny.

Mike Coppinger reported Benn’s official weight. Lance Pugmire later reported that the glove-weight adjustment waiver request had been withdrawn. Had either fighter exceeded 147, they would have boxed in 10-ounce gloves. Both made the limit, so they will use eight-ounce gloves.

Benn passing the scale test does not answer the bigger question of what the cut took from him. He had not competed at welterweight since 2022 and spent his last three fights above the division. Losing the pounds is one challenge. Recovering enough to absorb Ryan’s left hook and body shots is another.

Ryan had argued that Benn would be more susceptible in the smaller gloves after stripping away so much weight. Now he gets the conditions he wanted without Benn missing the limit.

Coming in at 145.5 also gives Ryan no obvious size excuse if the fight becomes physical. Benn will likely try to crowd him, attack his body, and prevent him from setting up the left hook from long range. Ryan must control the distance and avoid getting pinned against the ropes.

The first few rounds should reveal far more than the scale did. Benn may look quick and energetic early, but the real test comes after he absorbs clean punches and is forced to work continuously.

Both men handled their contractual obligation. Now Ryan gets eight-ounce gloves against a fighter he believes weakened himself to reach 146. The advantage he talked about all week is his to prove.
