The WBC confirmed the title defense after Whittaker stopped Richard Rivera in the second round of their June 27 fight in Brooklyn. That performance followed his first-round knockout of Benjamin Gavazi last November.
Those two wins required only three combined rounds. They displayed Whittaker’s speed, timing and finishing ability, but did little to prepare him for a long fight against an opponent capable of disrupting his rhythm.
Wallace brings a different set of questions. The Australian-based Irishman is a tall southpaw with a 17–1 record, 12 knockouts and extensive amateur experience. He has already beaten Jerome Pampellone and will not be arriving in Birmingham merely to complete another Whittaker highlight video.
The Liam Cameron fights showed why Whittaker still needs this type of opponent. Cameron crowded him, made the exchanges physical, and refused to let the favorite control the pace. Their first meeting ended in a technical draw before Whittaker won the rematch by second-round stoppage.
That knockout answered questions about Whittaker’s ability to handle pressure surrounding a rematch. It did not show how he responds over ten or twelve competitive rounds when an awkward opponent survives his early attacks.
Wallace does not possess Bivol’s precision, footwork or defensive discipline. He can still give Whittaker something more valuable than another quick knockout: resistance.
A win would give Whittaker the IBF position required for a world title opportunity in 2027. How he wins may reveal more than the eliminator itself. Before facing Bivol, Whittaker needs proof that his professional education has caught up with his ranking.
