The high-scoring Chicago Cubs lineup was shut out in Game 1 of the National League wild card series at Petco Park and the team will try to extend its season with a win-or-go-home contest against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado hit first-inning home runs for the Padres in the opener and San Diego never looked back, going on to win 8-0 as starter Michael King took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
Kevin Gausman will start Game 2 for the Cubs while Nick Pivetta takes the mound for the Padres, hoping to put away Chicago and get some revenge for last year’s loss at this stage in the postseason. The Padres have not reached the World Series since 1998 and have never won a championship.
The Padres-Cubs winner advances to the best-of-five NL Division Series, where it will face the Milwaukee Brewers, who finished with MLB’s best regular season record. If the Cubs win Game 2 on Wednesday, the winner-take-all Game 3 will be played on Thursday in San Diego.
