Tyson Fury Wants Another Warm-Up Before Anthony Joshua Fight, Says Manager

Tyson Fury may be slowing down plans for a long-awaited fight with Anthony Joshua by pushing for another stay-busy bout first, according to his manager Spencer Brown.

Fury returned earlier this month after 16 months out of the ring, beating Arslanbek Makhmudov on points in London. After the win, he called for Joshua to join him in the ring and renewed talk of the heavyweight showdown that has dragged on for years.

A two-fight framework has been discussed for Joshua, with a July return expected before a proposed November clash against Fury. Brown now says Fury’s side would also prefer one more fight before stepping into that matchup.

“We’ve signed, we’re just waiting. We’re ready to go,” Brown said to Goldstar Promotions. “The thing is, Tyson has been out of the ring for a long time. So we’d probably want another fight before the AJ fight. A proper warm-up and then we’re ready to go.”

Brown also pointed to Fury’s new relationship with Netflix, saying he expects Fury’s future bouts to continue on the platform after his comeback win was carried there.

“We are just waiting for Anthony and Eddie Hearn to sign,” Brown said. “But it will be nice to have one more fight.”

The problem is obvious. Extra tune-ups create fresh risk for a fight that has already missed several windows. If Fury picks another safe opponent for a July tune-up, it’ll likely be someone with a decent ranking but limited mobility, think a Mahmoud Charr or a rematch with someone like Derek Chisora.

Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh has seen similar plans collapse before when one side lost a supposed easy fight. A proposed Joshua vs Deontay Wilder showdown fell apart after defeats, while plans around a rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia also broke down the same way.

Fury-Joshua is still the biggest all-British fight available. Adding more steps before it happens feels like tempting fate again.
