Former world champion and DAZN commentator Sergio Mora is concerned that Errol Spence may be taking too big a risk by returning from a three-year absence straight into a fight against Tim Tszyu.
Spence, 36, is scheduled to face the former WBO junior middleweight champion on July 25 in Sydney, Australia. The bout will mark Spence’s first appearance since his ninth-round stoppage loss to Terence Crawford in July 2023.
“Spence has chosen not to take a tune-up. That [being victorious] takes its toll as well, man. The brain is getting rattled, even when you’re winning, and then all the sparring sessions,” said Sergio Mora on DAZN Boxing.
Mora also pointed to Spence’s defensive style as another reason for concern.
“I hate that earmuff defense. It’s bound to catch up to him, and if he fights Tszyu, it’s not going to be nice, man. I think he did so much for boxing as an Olympian and as a champion, and he’s given so many great fights against great names.”
“You know, it’s going to be tragic for him to go up against Tim Tszyu and take a beating on foreign soil like that. I don’t want to see it. I wish him the best, though.”
The fight will take place at a 158-pound catchweight and represents a major test for both men. Tszyu, 31, is attempting to rebuild his position near the top of the junior middleweight division after losses to Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev, while Spence is seeking to prove he can still compete at an elite level after one of the longest layoffs of his professional career.
A victory over Tszyu would immediately place Spence back into the conversation for major fights at junior middleweight, but Mora believes the former unified welterweight champion is taking a significant gamble by returning against a younger opponent known for his power and aggressive style.
