Tony Yoka Out Of Murat Gassiev Title Fight With Back Injury

“Per source involved, Tony Yoka has suffered a back injury and is out of his fight with WBA heavyweight titlist Murat Gassiev,” Rafael wrote on X. “Undetermined yet if it will be rescheduled or if a new opponent will be sought.”

The fight was scheduled to headline a card at Moscow’s VTB Arena and would have marked the first defense of Gassiev’s WBA “Regular” heavyweight title.

For Yoka, the setback is another frustrating delay in his pursuit of a world championship. The 2016 Olympic gold medalist had seen other opportunities fall through earlier this year before finally landing the title shot against Gassiev.

With just over a week remaining before the event, it is unclear whether organizers will postpone the fight or find a late replacement opponent to keep Gassiev on the card. No official announcement has been made regarding a substitute, and there is no timetable yet for Yoka’s return.

This is exactly what can happen when a title defense is built around a fighter whose career has been marked by inconsistency, cancellations, and outside-the-ring setbacks.

Organizers gambled that Tony Yoka would finally make it to the ring in Moscow. Instead, a back injury has forced him out just over a week before fight night. Yoka’s career in recent years has been interrupted by canceled fights, promotional setbacks, and performances that have done little to restore the momentum he generated after winning Olympic gold in 2016.

For Murat Gassiev, the timing could hardly be worse. With the event only days away, his first defense of the WBA “Regular” heavyweight title is suddenly in limbo as promoters decide whether to secure a late replacement or postpone the fight altogether.

For Yoka, it is another missed opportunity to revive a career that has repeatedly stalled. For the promoters, it is another reminder that relying on Yoka to carry a major event has become an increasingly risky bet.
