Matchroom signs Michael Zerafa, promises fight announcement after adding veteran middleweight

Matchroom Boxing has added Australian middleweight Michael Zerafa to its growing stable, with the promotional company confirming the signing on Saturday and teasing that his next fight will be announced soon.

“Welcome to the team, Michael Zerafa,” Matchroom said on social media. “Another exciting addition to our middleweight mix. Fight news dropping soon for Pretty Boy.”

The move gives the 34-year-old Zerafa (34-5, 22 KOs, 1 NC) a fresh promotional home after spending much of his career fighting in Australia. It remains unclear what role Eddie Hearn envisions for the veteran, who has built his recent resume largely against domestic and regional opposition.

Zerafa’s biggest victories came against former welterweight world champion Jeff Horn, whom he stopped in nine rounds in 2019, and Anthony Mundine, who was knocked out in the opening round of his final professional fight in 2021.

His recent run has been mixed. Zerafa challenged WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara in March 2024 but was stopped in the second round. Earlier this year, his highly anticipated clash with Nikita Tszyu ended in a controversial third-round no-contest after an accidental clash of heads left Zerafa complaining of vision problems.

Matchroom has not revealed whether it plans to keep Zerafa active in Australia or use him on international DAZN cards. The company described him only as another addition to its middleweight roster.

While Matchroom promotes WBO junior middleweight champion Xander Zayas, a matchup between the unbeaten titleholder and Zerafa appears unlikely at this stage. Zerafa has competed almost exclusively at middleweight in recent years, and there would be little obvious incentive for Zayas and his team to travel to Australia unless an unusually lucrative offer materialized.

The only certainty for now is that Zerafa’s Matchroom debut will be announced soon as the former world title challenger begins the next chapter of his career.
