Just as Ronald Acuña returns, Braves take another blow with Drake Baldwin injury

The Atlanta Braves, who have withstood myriad of injuries all season to still emerge as perhaps the best team in baseball, have been hit with another gut-punch.

This time, they’ll be without MVP candidate Drake Baldwin, their finest all-around player this season, who was placed on the injured list Tuesday morning with a strained oblique muscle.

Atlanta officials told USA TODAY Sports there is no timetable when he’ll return.

Baldwin, who won the National League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year award last season, was having a sensational season as the Braves’ everyday catcher. He ranked in the top 10 in six NL offensive categories, hitting .303 with 13 homers, 38 RBI and 39 runs, with a .931 OPS.

He had played in all 48 of Atlanta’s games.

The injury comes as former MVP outfielder Ronald Acuna returns from the injured list after being out two weeks with a strained hamstring.

Atlanta, which has been without veteran catcher Sean Murphy most of the season, is recalling Chadwick Tromp to replace Baldwin on the active roster. He will share catching duties with veteran Sandy Leon.

Atlanta also shook up its bullpen by designating veteran reliever Aaron Bummer for assignment, optioning rookie JR Ritchie to the minors, calling up Victor Mederos from Triple-A Gwinnett and activating Dylan Dodd from the injured list.

Baldwin’s injury comes at a time when Atlanta’s lead in the NL East is starting to become precarious. The red-hot Philadelphia Phillies, who have won 16 of their past 20 games, have picked up three games in the standings in the last five days, and are sitting seven games out.

Atlanta, 32-16, which suffered its biggest blowout loss of the season Monday night in a 12-0 loss to the Miami Marlins, removed Baldwin from the game in the sixth inning but made no announcement that he was injured.
