Jesse Rodriguez vs Antonio Vargas: Bam Targets Meaningful Fights

Jesse Rodriguez will face Antonio Vargas on June 13 in Arizona, with the two-division champion moving up to bantamweight in a fight his team says fits his need for real opposition rather than routine matchups.

Rodriguez said the move to 118 pounds is part of a broader approach focused on testing himself rather than staying active against lower-level opponents. The bout marks his first appearance under a new multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing.

Trainer Robert Garcia made it clear that the team has seen a difference in Rodriguez when the level of opposition drops. He said those types of fights have not brought out the best in him, pointing instead to stronger performances when Rodriguez is matched against opponents who carry more threat and recognition.

“He’s had a couple of fights where the opponents are not that challenging for him, not a big name, not a big meaning, and he hasn’t performed well,” Garcia said to Boxingscene. “He wants a new title, to be undisputed or to take a unification. He’d rather not do a stay-busy fight.”

Rodriguez echoed that mindset, describing the Vargas fight as part of a pattern of pushing himself rather than managing risk. He said each outing is built around proving himself again, even when coming off dominant wins at lower weights.

Vargas enters with limited experience outside Florida and a draw against Daigo Higa in Japan, giving Rodriguez a different type of opponent as he adjusts to a higher weight class. The fight offers a path toward a third division title, but it also serves as a test of how Rodriguez carries his power and timing at bantamweight.

The longer-term plan still includes a potential meeting with the winner of Naoya Inoue against Junto Nakatani, though that remains tied to timing and results later this year. Garcia said the fight is expected to happen after Rodriguez handles his immediate goals.

For now, the focus stays on Vargas, with Rodriguez entering the fight looking to maintain the standard his team says only shows up when the challenge is real.
