Jeff Fenech says Tim Tszyu can surpass Kostya

Jeff Fenech has watched Tim Tszyu grow up since infancy, and the Australian boxing legend says he has long believed the former world champion has the potential to eclipse both him and his Hall of Fame father, Kostya Tszyu.

Working alongside Tszyu for the past eight weeks has only strengthened that belief ahead of his July 26 showdown against former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.

“I’ve spoken to Tim all his life, since he’s a baby,” Fenech said on FOX Footy and 2 More. “I’ll just give you a little story. When he was three months old, he had teeth. He could eat meat.

“We’ve traveled, and I’ve always watched him and thought, ‘Well, this kid is going to be the greatest Aussie fighter.’ He will surpass me and his dad. I’ve always thought that, and I still think that he’s going to have the opportunity to do that.”

The partnership came together after the two cleared the air following Fenech’s previous public criticism of Tszyu. Since joining the training camp, Fenech said he has been impressed by Tszyu’s work ethic and believes technical adjustments have unlocked another level.

“I’ve been in camp with him for just over eight weeks now. It’s been the most amazing eight weeks of my life watching this guy give 200 percent every day,” Fenech said.

“People say that he can’t punch like his dad. It’s just him getting in the positions right now and doing a few things that we’ve changed. They’re all going to get a shock.”

Tszyu welcomed Fenech’s influence, saying the Hall of Famer has transformed both his preparation and his outlook.

“My life has completely changed with Jeff by my side now, all for the better,” Tszyu said. “I come back home, and I’m happy. It’s an important thing. It’s not just this sport. In life it’s very important to come back home and be happy, and I think Jeff has been a big part of that.”

Fenech believes those changes will be evident when Tszyu faces Spence, predicting fans will see the best version of the Australian star yet.
