Officials had several possible outcomes to consider after watching the replay. Allen could not receive a stoppage victory because the punch was ruled an accidental foul rather than a legal blow. A disqualification would have required the referee to treat the foul as intentional.
Trainer Jamie Moore accepted the no contest despite Allen’s visible unhappiness inside the ring.
“He’s gone to hit him in the side of the head. He’s turned his head, he’s hit him in the back of the head, and he’s fallen out of the ring,” Moore told IFL TV. “Dave can’t win on an unintentional foul, but he can’t lose either. So it’s got to be a no contest. By the rules, they’ve done the right thing.”
Under the unified rules commonly used in professional boxing, a fighter knocked out of the ring receives 20 seconds to return without assistance. An injury caused by an accidental foul before four completed rounds generally produces a no contest or technical draw, depending on the governing commission. There were no completed rounds available for a technical decision.
Consequently, neither boxer could be awarded a win from such an unusual sequence. The brief fight was erased competitively, leaving both men without a satisfactory result after completing full training camps.
Falling outside the ring also carried more danger than an ordinary knockdown. Carty dropped from the elevated platform into an area containing chairs and other ringside equipment. Medical personnel therefore had to consider the impact outside the ropes rather than judging his condition solely by the punch.
Before the ending, Carty had used his southpaw jab and attempted to press Allen. Moore was encouraged by how quickly his fighter closed the distance. Allen reached Carty at close range earlier than anticipated and forced the type of physical exchanges that suited him.
“I thought he hurt him a couple of times,” Moore said. “I was over the moon with the way it was going up until that point. It was just over way too quickly to tell anything.”
Allen now has one appearance remaining under his 40-fight limit. The Carty contest counts as his 39th professional bout even though it ended without a winner.
A rematch would settle the unfinished business, but it would also require Allen to use his intended last appearance on another meeting with a tricky southpaw. He could instead pursue a larger domestic payday and leave Carty as one of the strangest opponents listed on his record.
“He said he’s having 40 fights and then he’s done,” Moore said. “That was fight 39, so he’s got one more to do, and that’s it. We’ll see what happens.”
