Frank Vogel joining Steve Kerr, Golden State Warriors as associate head coach next season

Frank Vogel is teaming up with Steve Kerr.

The longtime head coach struck a deal to join the Golden State Warriors as their associate head coach next season, according to both NBA insider Marc Stein and ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Vogel spent last season as an assistant under Jason Kidd with the Dallas Mavericks, which marked his first job in the league since his split with the Phoenix Suns in 2024.

Vogel has worked in the league for more than two decades, and holds a 250-181 record as a head coach. Most notably, Vogel led LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers to a championship inside the league’s COVID-19 bubble in Walt Disney World in 2020.

The 53-year-old has also led the Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic. He only spent one season in charge of the Suns, though the team parted with him after just a 49-33 record.

The Warriors went 37-45 last season, and missed the playoffs for the second time in three years under Kerr’s watch. But after rumors that he may leave the franchise, Kerr signed a two-year deal to remain their head coach earlier this summer.

Kerr has won four titles and holds a 604-353 record as the Warriors’ head coach. Last season was their worst under him, outside of their 15-win campaign in 2019-20. Assistants Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse, the two highest-ranking assistants on Kerr’s staff last season, have both left the team after their previous deals expired after last season.
