Frank Sanchez Knocks Out Richard Torrez Jr. In Two

Frank Sanchez Knocks Out Richard Torrez Jr. In Two

Frank Sanchez (26-1, 19 KOs) revived his heavyweight career in emphatic fashion on Saturday night, knocking out previously unbeaten Richard Torrez Jr. (14-1, 12 KOs) in the second round of their IBF heavyweight final eliminator at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

The ending came suddenly and violently after a cautious but competitive opening round. Torrez attempted to pressure Sanchez behind his usual aggressive style, but the Cuban veteran stayed composed, used his jab, and looked comfortable boxing at range.

Early in the second round, Sanchez found the opening he had been waiting for.

As Torrez stepped in to attack, Sanchez fired a perfectly timed counter right hand that landed flush and dropped the unbeaten contender hard to the canvas. Torrez attempted to gather himself, but the referee quickly halted the fight after seeing the condition he was in following the knockdown.

The victory moved Sanchez into position as a leading IBF challenger in the heavyweight division and marked one of the biggest wins of his professional career. Coming into the fight, much of the attention had centered on Torrez as one of Top Rank’s emerging heavyweight contenders, but Sanchez’s timing, patience, and power completely changed the direction of the bout.

Sanchez entered the contest needing a major performance after losing momentum following his knockout defeat to Agit Kabayel in 2024. The 32-year-old Cuban had returned with a lower-level comeback victory earlier this year, though questions still surrounded where he stood among the top heavyweights.

Those questions looked far less important after Saturday’s finish.

Torrez had built an unbeaten record through pressure, activity, and offensive volume, but Sanchez’s experience and counter punching proved too much once the exchanges opened up. The knockout also handed Torrez the first loss of his professional career and temporarily slowed the momentum behind one of the United States’ most closely watched heavyweight prospects.

With the win, Sanchez now moves closer to another world title opportunity at heavyweight after delivering one of the most damaging knockouts on the card.
