The decision drew criticism from promoter Bob Arum, who argued Leonard was risking everything by facing the unbeaten Kalule before securing the lucrative Hearns fight. Arum publicly predicted Kalule would win and warned that an upset would severely damage interest in the planned Leonard-Hearns showdown.

Kalule was no placeholder opponent. The Ugandan-born southpaw, based in Denmark, entered with a perfect 36-0 record and held both the WBA and The Ring light middleweight championships.

Kalule entered the fight with a perfect 36-0 record and had never been defeated or stopped. The Ugandan-born southpaw, who fought out of Denmark, held the WBA and The Ring light middleweight titles and was regarded as one of the division’s best fighters despite Leonard entering as the heavy favorite.

The event also featured WBA welterweight champion Thomas Hearns defending his title against Pablo Baez in the co-main event. The bout was originally planned as a 10-round non-title fight, but Hearns and trainer Emanuel Steward persuaded promoter Bob Arum to make it a championship defense. Arum also agreed to give Hearns equal billing with Leonard on the promotional posters, though Leonard remained the main event.

From the opening bell, Leonard surprised many observers by abandoning his trademark stick-and-move style. Instead, he stood his ground, pumping a stiff jab, throwing fast combinations, and repeatedly beating Kalule to the punch with superior hand speed.

Leonard controlled the first six rounds, but the undefeated champion showed why he had reached the top of the division. In the seventh, Kalule landed a short right hand that briefly stunned Leonard and injected new life into the contest. The eighth was closely contested as both fighters exchanged punches, with Kalule continuing to press forward.

The fight reached its conclusion in the ninth.

Late in the round, Leonard landed a hard right hand that hurt Kalule. As the champion attempted to clinch, Leonard unleashed a three-punch combination that sent Kalule crashing onto his back. Although Kalule rose before the count expired, he informed referee Carlos Berrocal that he could not continue, giving Leonard a ninth-round technical knockout victory.

The win improved Leonard’s record to 30-1 and made him a two-division world champion by capturing the WBA and The Ring light middleweight titles. More importantly, it erased any doubts about his ability to compete successfully against naturally bigger opponents.

Three months later, Leonard carried that momentum into his historic welterweight unification bout against Thomas Hearns in Las Vegas. Their September 1981 showdown became one of the defining fights of boxing’s golden era, with Leonard rallying for a dramatic 14th-round stoppage after trailing on the scorecards.

For Kalule, the defeat ended an unbeaten 36-fight run. Although he continued boxing for several more years, he never again reached the same level of prominence or reclaimed a world championship.

While “Astrowars” is often overshadowed by Leonard’s rivalries with Duran, Hearns, Marvin Hagler and Wilfred Benítez, it remains one of the most important victories of his career. It proved Leonard could conquer a second weight class, defeated an undefeated world champion in his prime, and served as the final step before one of boxing’s most celebrated championship victories.
