Duane Bobick kept his unbeaten record intact on October 2, 1976, though the victory demanded far more than many expected. Facing Chuck Wepner at the Utica College Sports Complex in Utica, New York, the highly regarded heavyweight prospect had to work through constant physical tactics before earning a sixth-round stoppage in their nationally televised ten-round bout.
Bobick entered the contest as one of boxing’s fastest rising heavyweights. The Minnesota native brought a 36-0 record and a No. 3 ranking into the bout after victories over Scott LeDoux and Bunny Johnson. Those performances moved him within reach of a world title opportunity. Across the ring stood Wepner, ranked No. 9 after his memorable challenge of Muhammad Ali the previous year. “The Bayonne Bleeder” remained one of boxing’s best-known heavyweights because of his toughness, willingness to absorb punishment, and habit of turning fights into rough affairs.
Wepner quickly dragged the bout into the kind of physical contest he preferred.
Bobick boxed behind a steady jab before unloading combinations whenever Wepner moved inside. Wepner answered with clinching, rabbit punches, and constant wrestling inside. His face soon showed the effects. Cuts opened as Bobick’s punches repeatedly found the target, leaving blood streaming down Wepner’s face.
The breakthrough arrived in the fifth round when Bobick landed a crushing body shot that dropped Wepner to the canvas. The veteran beat the count, though the punishment had clearly accumulated.
Only 1:12 into the sixth round, referee Harold Valen halted the bout after Wepner’s cuts became too severe to continue. Bobick earned a technical knockout that moved him to 37-0.
Bobick remained on course for a championship opportunity and added another victory later that month. The momentum ended in May 1977 when Ken Norton stopped him in one round at Madison Square Garden.
The loss came late in Wepner’s memorable career. He fought only a handful more times before retiring in 1978, leaving behind a legacy defined far more by his courageous effort against Ali than by the punishment he absorbed against Bobick.
