Devin Haney, Jack Catterall In Advanced Talks For October 3

Catterall brings a secondary title into the picture. The British southpaw won the WBA Regular welterweight belt by defeating Shakhram Giyasov by unanimous decision on May 23 at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. He dropped Giyasov in the opening round before winning by scores of 119-108, 118-109 and 116-111.

That victory put Catterall in position for a fight with Romero, the WBA’s primary welterweight champion. The sanctioning body ordered Romero to face Catterall within 180 days following the Giyasov victory.

An October 3 challenge against Haney would send Catterall down a different path before that window expires.

It creates an unusual situation at 147 pounds. Haney holds the WBO championship, while Rolly owns the primary WBA belt. Catterall possesses the secondary version. Haney-Catterall therefore would not be a true unification despite both fighters bringing titles into the ring.

Catterall has pursued Haney for years, dating back to their time at light welterweight. He now has an opportunity to finally land the matchup after moving to 147 and claiming his first world title.

The choice carries risk. Catterall already has a route to Romero, but facing Haney offers an immediate chance to capture the WBO belt while testing himself against one of the division’s biggest names.

Haney gets an established southpaw coming off a significant welterweight victory rather than waiting for another option to materialize. If negotiations are completed, Catterall’s long pursuit of Haney may take priority over the WBA title fight already waiting for him.
