Denzel Bentley wanted a bigger choice for his first defense as WBO middleweight champion. Instead, negotiations with mandatory challenger Yoenli Hernandez have failed, and their fight is headed to a September 29 purse bid.
Bentley had been lined up for a unification with IBF champion Aaron McKenna. The WBO blocked it, ruling that its overdue mandatory obligation came with the belt when Bentley was elevated to full champion. Hernandez had waited for his shot, and the sanctioning body refused to make him wait through another champion’s plans.
The purse bid creates a second problem for Bentley. He and his team can still reach an agreement before September 29, but if they cannot, the winning bidder will control the promotion. The WBO set a $200,000 minimum bid when it ordered negotiations. That figure is a floor, not a forecast of what the fight will bring.
Bentley’s interest in a Conor Benn fight made commercial sense. Benn has a name that would sell a domestic event, and Bentley openly discussed the money such a fight could bring. WBO president Gustavo Olivieri shut that idea down, pointing to Hernandez’s mandatory status and Benn’s lack of a middleweight ranking.
Hernandez, a two time amateur world champion, is a serious test for a champion who has yet to defend the full title. Bentley can punch, but this is a harder sell than a Benn event and a harder route to the McKenna unification he wanted.
That is the bind the purse bid puts in plain view. Bentley has the belt, but Hernandez has the order. September 29 may decide who stages the fight. It will also show how much the promotional market is willing to pay for a mandatory Bentley could not put off.
