Jacob Bank protested when the WBO reinstated Zhanibek Alimkhanuly at the peak of its super middleweight rankings following a doping suspension. Now the sanctioning body has ordered Bank to trade punches with him for its vacant championship. The Danish contender possesses the exact opening he demanded, paired with the most dangerous opponent of his professional life.
WBO president Gustavo Olivieri announced on X that both camps have fifteen days to finalize terms before purse bid proceedings take over. The formal written decree will surface shortly.
Bank previously insisted that gifting Alimkhanuly an immediate path to the belt cheated active contenders who climbed the rankings through merit. Accepting the match does not erase that criticism. It forces Bank to validate his complaints inside the ring.
A massive incentive exists for Danish boxing. Bank built a dedicated local following in Kolding, yet capturing a world belt would provide Denmark its first premier 168 pound titleholder since the Mikkel Kessler era. The jump in class remains extreme. Bank has never shared a ring with a world champion possessing Alimkhanuly’s southpaw timing, pedigree, and precision.
Alimkhanuly faces his own trial. He dominated at middleweight, but moving up eight pounds tests his punch resistance and speed against a naturally bigger man. If Bank absorbs the early fire, applies relentless pressure, and attacks the ribs along the ropes, he will expose how well the Kazakh fighter holds up across twelve rounds at 168 pounds. Marching forward behind an upright guard will get Bank wrecked by Alimkhanuly’s signature straight left and counter uppercuts.
Pacheco holds the number two ranking above Bank, yet Olivieri bypassed him entirely by labeling Bank the first available contender. Pacheco squares off against Darius Fulghum on November 14 on DAZN. That booking hints at calculated matchmaking from his handlers, choosing to protect his trajectory rather than jump straight into a bout against an avoided southpaw.
The WBO had no choice. Olivieri had to keep the belt moving once Sheeraz vacated, and Pacheco effectively took himself off the board. Bank might be a far less marketable name internationally, but he is doing what Pacheco chose not to do: taking the fight that actually tests him.
If the fifteen-day window expires without signatures, a purse bid determines who controls the ring, the location, and the network. A Top Rank bid takes Bank to America on ESPN, while local backing from promoter Kasper Holgersen could bring the event to Denmark. Bank complained about the sanctioning body cutting corners for Alimkhanuly. He now holds the contract to settle that dispute with his fists.
