Daniel Dubois Won’t Wait For Fabio Wardley Rematch

Daniel Dubois stopped short of guaranteeing an immediate rematch with Fabio Wardley, saying his focus is on staying active and defending his WBO heavyweight title rather than waiting for any one opponent.

Wardley activated the rematch clause following his 11th-round stoppage loss to Dubois in April, a fight that saw the Londoner rally from an early knockdown to retain control and gradually break down the champion with sustained pressure.

Although a second fight has been widely discussed, Dubois suggested nothing has been finalized.

“Yeah, well, that’s what they’re talking about, but I’m not going to wait on anyone,” said Dubois when asked about Wardley during an interview with talkSPORT. “I’m going to get busy with that belt, defend that belt.”

The 28-year-old added that he wants to continue building on his success after reaching the top of the heavyweight division.

“I can’t wait to start improving, getting out there and maximizing what we’ve done since I was a kid being taken to the gym with my dad. And now we’re here, so,” said Dubois.

Dubois captured the WBO title with a dramatic knockout victory over Wardley, who had entered the fight after back-to-back stoppage wins over Justis Huni and Joseph Parker. Wardley enjoyed success early and scored a knockdown, but Dubois gradually took control as the fight progressed.

Heavy shots from Dubois left Wardley badly marked around the eyes and bloodied his nose before the referee halted the contest in the 11th round. Debate followed over whether the fight should have been stopped earlier.

Frank Warren has repeatedly indicated that the rematch remains the likely next step, and Wardley has already confirmed he intends to exercise his contractual right to a second fight.

Dubois’ latest comments do not rule out that outcome. They do, however, make clear that he is unwilling to put his career on hold while negotiations play out. The heavyweight champion wants activity, and his focus remains on defending the belt rather than waiting for a timetable to be settled.
