Ben Whittaker Fires Back At Critics Of His Opposition

Ben Whittaker appears increasingly aware of the criticism surrounding his opposition, and the Olympic silver medalist made it clear he believes many fans are overlooking the level of fighters he has already faced.

Whittaker returns on June 27 against Popeye Rivera in Brooklyn, New York, a fight that has drawn familiar questions about when the 29-year-old will begin facing the bigger names at light heavyweight.

Whittaker argued today that his recent opponents have been stronger than critics acknowledge.

“I’ve done step-ups already, but people kind of overlook them,” said Whittaker to Ring Magazine.

“My last guy [Braian Nahuel Suarez], he had a life and death with Lyndon for an IBO world title. This guy I’m fighting now lost on a split against Badou Jack for the WBC cruiserweight title. So, I’m not fighting no idiots right now,” said Whittaker. “They’re okay. Do you know what I mean? But I suppose when I go out there and perform the way I do, I make them look ordinary.”

The comments come as fans continue to push for Whittaker to face more established contenders. Anthony Yarde’s name has recently been mentioned as a possible future opponent, while others have questioned whether Whittaker’s development should be further advanced, given his amateur pedigree and age.

Whittaker, however, suggested he views much of the criticism as a compliment.

“If they’ve got something to say, ‘Oh, you should fight this person, should fight this person,’ it shows they know I’m good enough to beat that person. That’s how I see it,” said Whittaker.

The outspoken light heavyweight has become one of British boxing’s most discussed fighters since turning professional. His performances have generated attention on both sides of the Atlantic, but they have also brought growing scrutiny over the pace of his progression.

Whittaker’s focus remains on Rivera. A victory would move him another step closer to the higher-ranked opponents many observers believe should already be on his schedule.
