“And as for being irrelevant, Ryan Garcia, probably, but you’ve been gifted a world title fight coming off a loss to Rolly because you are a TikTok star,” Catterall stated on X. “I have to earn everything the hard way, nothing handed on a plate like you, you little gimp.”
The response followed Ryan’s attack on Catterall after the secondary WBA welterweight champion praised Haney as “a real one” and claimed his only defeat came against a drug cheat. Catterall also challenged Ryan to fight him next if he defeats Conor Benn on September 12.
Catterall has a valid complaint about Ryan’s route to the WBC belt. Garcia lost a wide decision to Rolando Romero in May 2025 before moving directly into a championship fight against Mario Barrios. His popularity protected his position in a way that competitive results alone would not have justified.
It is difficult to view Catterall’s behavior as anything other than an attempt to ingratiate himself with Haney. He has volunteered to battle Haney’s biggest enemy and act as his social-media soldier. The possible reward is obvious: Haney needs an opponent, and Catterall wants to be selected over Liam Paro.
Praising Haney as “a real one” tells Team Haney that Catterall accepts its position on Ryan without reservation. It resembles an audition from a fighter hoping public support will secure an opportunity that his own commercial value has not delivered.
Ryan recognized the courtship and attacked Catterall’s relevance. That insult struck at the weakness behind the entire campaign. Holding a belt gives Catterall some negotiating leverage, but he still needs Haney or Ryan to choose him before he can secure the payday he wants.
That financial disparity explains why Catterall keeps mentioning Ryan. A victory over Benn would leave Garcia with a championship, a large audience, and several richer options.
Catterall can challenge Ryan’s legitimacy, but he cannot force him into the ring. Defending Haney may be his way of persuading Team Haney to reward him with the fight he has been pursuing.
