Alvarez, 35, underwent elbow surgery last year and will miss the weekend he has consistently headlined. He has fought on Cinco de Mayo weekend every year since 2015, with the exception of 2018 and 2020.

Saturday’s event is led by David Benavidez, who moves up to cruiserweight to face unified champion Gilberto Ramirez. Benavidez previously held mandatory status at super middleweight during Alvarez’s undisputed title run.

Alvarez last fought on Mexican Independence weekend in September, losing a unanimous decision to Terence Crawford. He is expected to return in mid-September on the same holiday weekend.

His presence on Saturday has drawn attention because the co-main event features a WBA title fight at 168 pounds. The winner of Munguia vs. Resendiz would hold a belt in Alvarez’s division, making the outcome relevant to his next opponent options. No direct link has been confirmed, but the result adds another name to the current title picture.

If Resendiz wins, he becomes a massive high-reward, manageable-risk target for Saul’s homecoming. Resendiz is tough and has that relentless “Toro” style, but he is technically the kind of aggressive fighter Saul has historically timed and countered with ease.

The event will be streamed on Prime Video and DAZN. Former promoter Oscar De La Hoya is also expected to attend in support of his fighters, including Ramirez and Oscar Duarte. De La Hoya has been publicly critical of Alvarez in recent years.
