Canelo Alvarez Camp Signals Resendiz-Munguia Winner as Next Move

Eddy Reynoso may have said more than intended while discussing Canelo Alvarez’s next move, as his comments pointed less toward Christian Mbilli and more toward the winner of next week’s Jaime Munguia-Armando Resendiz fight

Canelo is expected to return in September on a Riyadh Season card after recovering from left elbow surgery. Reynoso told Ring Magazine that super middleweight remains the plan and named several possible opponents, including Mbilli. Yet the strongest language in the interview came when he spoke about the May 2 bout between Munguia and Resendiz for the WBA title.

“This time it’s Munguia against Resendiz in an all-Mexican fight on an all-Mexican card,” Reynoso said to Ring Magazine when discussing Cinco de Mayo weekend. “It’s going to be a tremendous fight, and we are prepared to win. This fight will be so good that it will steal the show. They have the ingredients to take the spotlight away from the main event.”

That stood out because Reynoso trains Munguia and has a direct interest in the result, but it also sounded like early positioning for what comes next. If Munguia wins, a rematch with Canelo would be easy to sell to a Mexican audience and simple to build around. If Resendiz wins, he would arrive with a belt and fresh momentum.

Mbilli was mentioned by Reynoso as a “great challenge” after his recent win over Lester Martinez, but the tone was different. It sounded like one option on a list, while the Munguia-Resendiz fight received the full sales pitch.

Canelo’s side also ruled out other routes. Reynoso said the David Benavidez fight is done and suggested there is little chance of revisiting it. Staying at 168 pounds also makes a Dmitry Bivol rematch less likely.

That leaves a smaller field than it first appears. When camps start praising one fight this hard months in advance, it is usually worth paying attention.
