Ben Whittaker faces Richard Rivera on June 27th in Brooklyn

Ben Whittaker is headed to the Barclays Center on June 27, but the choice of Richard “Popeye The Sailor Man” Rivera suggests Matchroom is still keeping the training wheels firmly attached. While the flashy 2020 Olympic silver medalist is being marketed as a “generational talent,” this matchmaking continues a trend that feels more like a slow crawl than a sprint toward a world title.

Rivera, 35, enters off a 17-month layoff and without a place in the top tier at light heavyweight. His record (27-2) gives him a surface-level look of credibility, but the two times he stepped up against Badou Jack and Luis Antonio Tejeda, he was beaten. Since then, his career has largely played out on smaller cards, limiting both his visibility and standing.

That profile fits the type of opponent Whittaker has been matched with so far.

Matchroom has consistently positioned Whittaker (12-1-1, 8 KOs) as a future star, with Eddie Hearn describing him as a “generational talent.” The matchmaking has not reflected that level of urgency. Instead, it has leaned toward experienced but manageable opponents who allow Whittaker to showcase his style without facing sustained pressure from a top contender.

At 29 by the time of the fight, Whittaker is no longer at the stage where development fights carry the same justification. Fighters at that age are typically being moved into eliminators or meaningful steps toward title contention. This bout doesn’t serve that purpose. It extends a run of carefully selected opposition rather than changing direction.

There is also little indication that Rivera brings broader recognition in the United States. Much of his work has taken place on undercards and smaller platforms, which limits his pull on a card positioned at a major venue like Barclays Center.

For Whittaker, the task is clear and familiar. He is expected to win, and to do so in a way that reinforces the image built around him. The problem is that the opponent does not test it.
