Baumgardner controlled the championship picture at 130 pounds before choosing to chase another belt five pounds north. She receives no settling-in fight at lightweight.
Turhan can punch.
The Turkish champion seized the IBF belt by stopping Brazilian Olympic gold medalist Beatriz Ferreira in the fifth round last December. She has since beaten Taylah Gentzen and Gabriella Tellez and enters November making her third title defense.
That finishing power gives Baumgardner a different problem to solve. She owns the quicker feet and sharp counters, but Turhan can close distance, set her base and punish mistakes with combinations once she forces her opponent into exchanges.
Baumgardner believes her championship experience will travel with her.
“When I set my mind to something, I see it through, and 135 will be no different,” Baumgardner said. “I know what it takes to become undisputed. I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again.”
Turhan expects Baumgardner to attack rather than simply box for points.
“As two boxers sharing a ‘win at all costs’ mentality, we guarantee a fierce, relentless battle where everything is left on the line. Two warriors, one fight, and only one winner.”
Three additional championship fights give the Arlington card depth.
WBC featherweight champion Tiara Brown defends against former undisputed champion Ellie Scotney, who climbs to 126 pounds chasing a championship in a second division. Brown brings strength and pressure, while Scotney will try to dictate the distance with her feet and combinations.
Skye Nicolson defends her WBC super bantamweight championship against three-time, two-division champion Miyo Yoshida in her MVP debut. Nicolson will look to establish her southpaw jab and control the ring positioning after injury forced their previous date to be scrapped.
Ramla Ali battles Mikiah Kreps for unified super bantamweight championships, completing the four-title-fight card.
Baumgardner’s move supplies the main tactical question. She cannot afford to stand at Turhan’s preferred distance and trade simply to prove she belongs at lightweight. Baumgardner needs to start with the jab, use her footwork and make Turhan pay with counters before the champion can set her feet.
If Turhan consistently gets inside and starts working the body, Baumgardner will find out quickly how much harder five additional pounds can punch.
