Advanced Talks For Moses Itauma-Hrgovic Fight Signal Major Risk For Rising Heavyweight

Moses Itauma’s rapid rise through the heavyweight ranks could be about to face its toughest examination yet.

InsideRingShow reported that unbeaten British heavyweight Moses Itauma and Croatian contender Filip Hrgovic are in advanced discussions for a fight in late August in London. The proposed bout would mark a significant step up in class for the 21-year-old prospect, who has stormed to a 14-0 record with 12 knockouts.

Itauma has looked dominant against the opposition placed in front of him, but Hrgovic presents a challenge unlike any he has encountered in either the amateur or professional ranks.

The British southpaw turned professional after an abbreviated amateur career that never saw him face the Eastern European, Cuban, or top American heavyweights who have traditionally served as measuring sticks for future contenders. While Itauma’s talent has never been in doubt, much of the excitement surrounding him has been based on projection rather than victories over seasoned international opposition. Hrgovic would change that.

The 34-year-old Croatian owns a 20-1 record with 15 knockouts and captured an Olympic bronze medal before embarking on a successful professional career. His only defeat came against Daniel Dubois in a fight many observers viewed as a meeting between two elite heavyweight contenders. Hrgovic returned to the win column earlier this month with a stoppage victory over Dave Allen.

There are also lingering questions about how Itauma responds under sustained pressure from an experienced heavyweight. Itauma was staggered by Jermaine Franklin, one of the few moments of adversity in his professional career. Franklin lacked both the size and pedigree Hrgovic would bring into the ring.

If the bout is finalized, Itauma will be facing a fighter with advantages in experience and proven competition. Hrgovic may no longer be viewed as the division’s next dominant force, but he remains a dangerous contender capable of exposing flaws in younger opponents.

This would represent more than another outing against a recognizable name for Itauma. It would be the clearest indication yet of whether his accelerated development has prepared him for the realities of the heavyweight elite.
