D’Angelo Russell’s time with the Memphis Grizzlies is over before he could even play a game.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Russell is being waived by the Grizzlies as the team needed flexibility with its roster. The 30-year-old guard was dealt to Memphis by the Washington Wizards in July as part of a trade involving six teams and 11 players.
The move has been coming as Yahoo Sports’ Kelly Iko reported in July that the two sides were working together to help Russell find a new home. His next team will be his sixth since entering the NBA in 2015-16 with the Los Angeles Lakers — one of two teams, along with the Brooklyn Nets, where he’s had two stints.
Russell played 26 games with the Mavericks last season, averaging a little over 19 minutes per night and 10.2 points, 4 assists and 2.3 rebounds.
After being dealt to the Wizards at the trade deadline, he did not play again during the 2025-26 season as the sides discussed a potential buyout. That never happened and Russell exercised his $6 million player option for this season before the summer trade.
