Teofimo Lopez Reveals Private Conversation With Devin Haney

Teofimo Lopez Reveals Private Conversation With Devin Haney

Teofimo Lopez already has a long-term target in mind beyond his August 22 challenge for Rolando Romero’s WBA welterweight title. The former two-division champion revealed he recently spoke with Devin Haney and believes the pair are on separate courses toward an eventual fight for the undisputed welterweight championship.

“I told Devin Haney about this,” Teofimo said to Sean Zittel. “I told Devin Haney, ‘Me and you, we’re going to go two different sides, but we’re going to meet at the end for undisputed at once.’ He said, ‘All right, those are your words.’ I said, ‘I’m keeping them. Let’s get it going.’ So, I think right now it’s more so who wins September 12th, but mainly right now focus on August 22nd. We’ll go from there. I don’t think I’m going to see Haney until the end.”

Lopez made it clear he is in no rush to face Haney. His preference is for both champions to continue collecting titles before meeting with every major belt on the line.

Teofimo also believes he will be a better fighter by the time that meeting arrives. Asked if he can eventually solve Haney’s movement and back-foot style, he expressed no doubts.

“Absolutely. You just got to practice. You got to practice on all those fundamentals. That’s it. I’m a pure boxer when it comes to it,” said Teofimo. “Coming forward has been looked at as a flaw of mine, but flaws are meant to happen so that you can fix them.”

Teofimo has repeatedly identified becoming the undisputed welterweight champion before the 2028 Olympic Games as one of his biggest career goals. Rolly remains the immediate obstacle, while Haney continues building his own position atop the division.

If both champions continue winning over the next several years, Lopez believes he and Haney will eventually meet in one of the biggest fights available at 147 pounds.
