Eddie Hearn praises Anthony Joshua’s Olympic gold but leaves out controversial London 2012 final

Eddie Hearn described Anthony Joshua’s Olympic gold medal as the purest achievement of his career, pointing to the pressure of competing for Great Britain rather than fighting for financial rewards.

Reflecting on Joshua’s amateur career in a conversation released by DAZN, Hearn said the Olympics represented something different from the professional ranks.

“It’s not about money. It’s not about how much am I getting for that? You have to win this competition. And that’s why I think that event is the greatest event of all time… You’re representing your country,” Hearn said to DAZN.

Joshua agreed, admitting the weight of boxing at a home Olympics was unlike anything else he had experienced.

“You feel the pressure of the nation definitely. I was in London. Yeah. Mad,” Joshua said.

One part of that story, however, wasn’t mentioned.

Joshua’s victory over the defending Olympic champion remains one of the most debated decisions in Olympic boxing. After the bout finished level on points, Joshua was awarded the gold medal on countback, a verdict that drew immediate criticism from many fans and media members, who argued Cammarelle had done enough to win.

Hearn’s comments centered on the pressure Joshua faced representing Great Britain rather than the controversy that followed the final. Although Joshua is officially recognized as the 2012 Olympic super heavyweight champion, debate over the verdict has continued ever since.

Winning Olympic gold is a massive achievement, but the cloud over that final match is stuck to Joshua’s amateur legacy forever.
