Abdullah Mason Rallies To Stop Albert Bell In 12th Round, Retains WBO Lightweight Title

Bell, a 33-year-old veteran from Toledo, exceeded expectations early. Using sharp counterpunching, lateral movement and disciplined boxing, he repeatedly disrupted Mason’s offense and appeared to bank several of the first six rounds. The champion had difficulty cutting off the ring and finding clean openings against the slick challenger.

The fight began to change in the second half.

Mason started investing heavily to the body, increased his punch output and steadily closed the distance. As Bell’s movement slowed, the hometown favorite began landing his powerful left hand with greater frequency and forced the challenger into exchanges that favored his youth and power.

By the championship rounds, Mason had taken command.

He put an emphatic finish on the fight in the 12th round, dropping Bell with a heavy shot early in the frame. Bell beat the count but was still hurt, and Mason immediately went back on the attack. A follow-up barrage sent Bell to the canvas a second time, prompting the referee to wave off the contest.

The stoppage drew some debate. Bell appeared to be trying to recover after getting back to his feet before the referee intervened, leading some observers to believe he should have been given a little more time. Even so, Mason had completely shifted the fight’s momentum and Bell was absorbing heavy punishment in the closing moments.

For Mason, it was a valuable learning experience as much as a successful title defense. After looking tentative against Bell’s movement and counterpunching early, he made the adjustments needed to wear down the veteran and produce another late stoppage.

Bell also left Cleveland with his reputation enhanced. After accepting the opportunity against one of boxing’s brightest young champions, he gave Mason far more resistance than many expected and was competitive through the first half of the contest before the younger fighter’s pressure and power took over.

The victory capped a memorable night for the Mason family. Abdullah retained his world title after his brothers, Abdurrahman and Ibrahim Mason, both recorded victories earlier on the card, completing a perfect evening in front of an enthusiastic hometown crowd.
