William Zepeda believes boxing fans will see a new version of him when he faces Lamont Roach Jr. for the vacant WBC lightweight title on Saturday night. The Mexican contender said the lessons from his lone professional defeat have fueled changes without sacrificing the aggressive style that made him a title contender.
Reflecting on the year since his unanimous decision loss to Shakur Stevenson, Zepeda explained that his team used the setback as an opportunity to improve rather than dwell on it.
“After that loss, we analyzed the fight. We looked at the mistakes we made. Throughout this entire year, I never stopped training,” said Zepeda to the Spitbucket podcast. “I’ve been working, improving, adding new things and learning new things. I think you’re going to see a new version of Camarón on Saturday.”
He dismissed concerns that a year outside the ring will produce ring rust. Instead, he described the layoff as a period of development following the lone defeat of his career.
The Mexican contender also praised Roach after their faceoff, saying he saw an opponent fully prepared for the opportunity.
“I see a fighter who’s focused and motivated. That motivates me to be 100 percent in the fight and stay focused because we know how dangerous he is,” Zepeda said.
Those adjustments will not come at the expense of the pressure and punch volume that define his style.
“You’re going to see the same William Zepeda with the same intensity and the same punch volume, but a smarter version, a more patient version that takes advantage of openings. I want all the Mexican fans, all the Latinos, and all boxing fans not to miss it because it’s going to be a great fight.”
There is no plan for a stylistic overhaul. The pressure and high punch output remain intact. Better decision-making once he gets into range is the adjustment he believes will make the difference against Roach.
