The Chicago White Sox are picking up a veteran outfielder ahead of their playoff push.
The White Sox acquired Tommy Pham in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Further specifics of the deal are not yet known, though Pham is expected to join the White Sox when MLB rosters expand on Tuesday for the final stretch of the regular season.
Pham is eligible to be traded despite the deal coming after the trade deadline earlier this month, as he was on a minor league deal with the Phillies. He will be eligible to play in the postseason, too, as the deal was done ahead of the Sept. 1 deadline.
The White Sox will mark the fourth organization that Pham has played for this season. The 38-year-old started the year with the Mets, but he was designated for assignment in April after starting out the year 0-for-13 with seven strikeouts. He has then spent time on minor league deals with the Baltimore Orioles and the Phillies.
Most recently, Pham has held a .250 batting average with three home runs and 25 RBI in 44 games for the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate.
Now, Pham will get to rejoin the White Sox after his stint there in 2024. The team will start their four-game series with the Houston Astros on Monday night with a 72-64 record. That has them in first in the AL Central race, 3.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians.
While Pham has had a shaky 2026 campaign, the White Sox clearly hope that Pham can provide them a bit of extra depth as they attempt to win the division and make the postseason for the first time since 2021.
