Ben Simmons has been through a share of ups and downs throughout his NBA career since entering the league as the No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft. He’s officially back in the league.
Simmons returns to an NBA roster after signing with the Sacramento Kings filling out their final open spot, a source close to the team confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. Simmons is signing a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Kings, according to ESPN, who were first to report the signing.
Simmons has missed time throughout his career due to chronic back problems and a series of leg injuries. He took time off last year, missing the entire 2025-26 season to rehabilitate his body from his lingering injuries. He’s battled through physical and mental adversity throughout his career, but now he’s ready to get back on the court.
Here’s a look back at what Simmons has been through in his NBA career:
LSU standout goes No. 1, misses season
Ben Simmons came into the NBA as a bonafide star, coming out of LSU where he averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, two steals and nearly a block per game as a freshman in 2015-2016. He always has been looked at as a guy who can do a little bit of anything and everything on the floor.
Simmons went on to become the No. 1 pick the 2016 NBA Draft, selected by the Philadelphia 76ers. However, Simmons missed the entire 2016-17 season after rolling his ankle in his first practice, causing a fracture in his right foot and ankle, which did not heal throughout the season.
Simmons lives up expectations as NBA star ascends
The following seasons, Simmons was healthy and he proved why he was worthy of a top pick. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2018 since he never technically played a game his first year, and the 76ers advanced to the NBA playoffs. He averaged 15.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.9 blocks that year. The Sixers lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Boston Celtics in five games.
Simmons earned his first All-Star selection during the 2018-2019 season, and the 76ers made another postseason appearance losing to the eventual champion Toronto Raptors in a seven-game Eastern Conference semifinal series that ended in a game-winning shot from Kawhi Leonard.
Simmons continued to excel as a playmaker offensively and showcased ability on the defensive end, earning first-team All-Defense honors, along with another All-Star appearance in 2019-20, but the 76ers were swept in the first round by the Celtics.
Simmons continued to show his versatility into the following season in 2020-21, in which he was an All-Star again, an All-Defense first-team selection again and even runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year. Philadelphia lost to the Atlanta Hawks in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. It was the infamous game that Simmons passed up a wide open dunk or layup as Philadelphia trailed, 88-86, with 3:30 remaining. It changed his career.
Physical, mental health takes a toll
Simmons asked for a trade during the 2021 offseason and caused a holdout, not appearing for training camp or preseason. He said he was away dealing with his mental health. Simmons ended up missing the entire 2021-22 with a back injury in addition to mental health hurdles from the previous postseason, along with a trade holdout from Philadelphia. He was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in February 2022.
He came back the next season but only for a limited time. Simmons played 43 games in 2022-23 dealing with a series of knee and lingering back issues. His back issues continued into the next season in 2023-24, during which he appeared in 15 games with the Nets before being shut down with continued back pain that required surgery.
Simmons played 33 games with the Nets before he was waived during the 2024-25 season. He signed with the Los Angeles Clippers in February 2025, but appeared in only 18 games as he struggled with his physical health and athletic mobility. He became a free agent after the season.

Simmons missed the entire 2025-26 season to focus on his return, completely resting to focus on his rehab.
Simmons is back, Kings take a chance
Simmons returns to NBA, fresh and ready to hoop. The Kings believe so, as well.
Simmons gives them an additional ball handler on a roster that heralds Zach LaVine, Domantas Sabonis and the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, Darius Acuff Jr.
Simmons isn’t coming in a stranger. He and LaVine met each other when they were young. Both Sabonis and Simmons were in the same draft class a decade ago.
Simmons is expected to function as a backup point guard to Acuff, but can see minutes alongside him as well, according to a source close to the team.
General manager Scott Perry and head coach Doug Christie have often publicly emphasized a desire to be a team that believes in playing rugged defense. Simmons’ signing adds to their pillars. The Kings can benefit from his 6-foot-10, 240-pound frame. A source close to the team said there’s belief in his versatility to defend every position on the floor that’ll make Sacramento a bigger team.
There’s optimism that Simmons’ past injuries are behind him and the Kings are taking that chance.
