Tim Tszyu doubts Errol Spence after three-year break

Tim Tszyu is treating Errol Spence’s three-year absence as the defining issue in their fight, not the loss to Terence Crawford.

Tim’s refusal to credit the Crawford loss as a blueprint is a smart psychological move. By calling Crawford “one of a kind,” he avoids the trap of trying to emulate a style that doesn’t fit his own. Instead of trying to out-box Errol, Tim is leaning into his own strengths: physical durability, relentless pressure, and heavy hands.

“The question is what does Errol Spence have left in the tank after another three years off,” Tszyu said to the media.

“I think that was Terence Crawford. I think Terence Crawford is one of a kind of his generation and the victory belongs to him.”

Tszyu’s focus stays on inactivity. He hasn’t dealt with anything close to that kind of time away from the ring, and he expects it to show early.

“I’m going to bring the heat from round one. He’s the one that’s had three years off. I’m not rusty. My wheels have been in motion.”

The Australian Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) also removed any doubt about his mindset going into the fight with Errol on July 25th. He said the decision to accept the bout came from confidence, not risk.

“I’m taking this fight because I know I’m going to win. If I had a little glimpse of losing, I wouldn’t have taken this fight,” said Tszyu

This mindset dictates Tim’s strategy for the opening bell. He has no intention of feeling out the distance or playing a tactical game of chess. Instead, he plans to drag Errol into a phone booth battle immediately, forcing the returning veteran to answer for those three years of inactivity under heavy fire.

The bout is set for a 158-pound catchweight, placing both fighters outside their usual divisions. Tszyu acknowledged Spence could still carry natural size into the ring despite the move up.

“I think possibly. He’s a big boy,” said Tim.

Tszyu enters the fight coming off recent activity and a run of difficult opponents. He believes that experience leaves him better equipped for the moment than a fighter returning from a long absence.

He is betting that the difference shows once the opening rounds start.
