The former two-division champion believes Andre Ward or Floyd Mayweather could help sharpen Ennis’ defense while Derek “Bozy” Ennis remains his head trainer

Jaron “Boots” Ennis may have collected two world titles at 154 pounds, but Tim Bradley believes his development isn’t finished. The former champion says adding an experienced boxing mind like Andre Ward or Floyd Mayweather could tighten Ennis’ defensive timing as he chases the undisputed championship.

“I’ve been thinking that Boots should add maybe another guy to his team,” said Bradley on his channel. “I almost feel like it’s too late now. Boots is set in his ways. Maybe an OG like Andre Ward, where these guys respect, can come in and maybe show him something. Mayweather, maybe. Maybe one of those guys can go in there and show him something, talk to him about improving this and how to do this and how to do that.”

Bradley made it clear he was not criticizing longtime trainer and father Derek “Bozy” Ennis, crediting him for developing one of boxing’s most gifted fighters. However, he believes an additional experienced voice could help refine Ennis’ defensive instincts.

“I think that when it comes to his defense, it’s mainly because he ain’t been taught the right way. Bozy has done a good job with his son and creating this monster,” said Bradley. “He’s done a great job with him. I can’t say anything different other than that. However, you need another set of eyes just for that part, just for a little bit more defense. It’s not the know-how, it’s know when. He knows how to do the stuff, but it’s knowing when to do it and when not to do it.”

Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs) won the WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles with a 7th-round stoppage of Zayas, moving within two belts of becoming the undisputed 154-pound champion. Bradley believes Ennis has the talent to dominate the division, but he sees room for improvement despite the unbeaten champion’s recent success.

Ennis has not indicated that he plans to make changes to his team. Bozy has trained him throughout his professional career and remains the only head trainer Ennis has worked with as a world champion.
