Bradley says Roach’s experience against pressure fighters and southpaws gives him the edge on August 1
Tim Bradley believes Lamont Roach Jr. is the fighter most capable of handing William Zepeda a defeat. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Bradley picked Roach to win the vacant WBC lightweight title on August 1 and pointed to the matchup’s stylistic advantages as the key factor.
“I’m picking Roach to win the fight,” Bradley said on his channel. “I think this is a perfect style matchup. I think Roach fights southpaws better than he does orthodox fighters.”
Roach enters the bout after a draw with Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz and a disputed draw against Gervonta Davis, two physically demanding contests against pressure fighters that Bradley believes have prepared him for Zepeda’s relentless approach.
“I think he fought one of the best southpaws in the world in Tank Davis. And he did damn good against him,” Bradley said. “He wasn’t spooked by the punching power.”
Bradley believes Roach has the tools needed to neutralize Zepeda’s pressure.
“When guys that like to come forward and be aggressive, nine times out of 10, they don’t like to get bagged up,” Bradley said. “Roach has the ability to do that. He has the knowledge and he has the IQ to be able to do that. And if he does that, he wins this fight.”
Bradley also cautioned that Roach cannot afford to leave matters in the hands of the judges, arguing that he must create more separation than he did in his recent draws against Isaac Cruz and Gervonta Davis.
