A former Amateur Championship winner and multiple DP World Tour winners have been confirmed in the line-up for the Last-Chance Qualifier ahead of The Open.
The R&A launched a new event this year to finalise the last qualifier in the field for The Open, with 12 players set to battle it out on the morning of Monday, July 13 at Royal Birkdale to secure the final spot in the final major of the season.
As of July 7, the field will comprise Adri Arnaus, Wesley Bryan, Joe Dean, Sam Easterbrook, John Gough, Marcus Helligkilde, Angel Hidalgo, Charles Huntzinger, Matt Moloney, Aldrich Potgieter, Matti Schmid, Andrew Wilson.
The invitations to compete in the 18-hole event, which is being televised on Sky Sports, have been based around five exemption categories, chief among them a player’s official world ranking at the time of the cut-off point for automatic qualification although two amateurs, American Matt Moloney and England’s Sam Easterbrook are also in the field.
Moloney finished runner-up in this year’s Amateur Championship, while Easterbrook is an England Golf squad member who reached the quarter-finals of the same event, and is currently representing England in the European Team Championship in Estonia.
Wesley Bryan, 36, who last qualified for The Open in the 2017, and hasn’t played on the PGA Tour since being suspended for featuring in a LIV Golf influencers event, finished one shot outside of the qualification spots at Open Final Qualifying in West Lancashire last week, but now gets another chance to earn a major invite.
