Stephen Edwards Says Devin Haney’s Fearlessness Is Getting Inside Fighters’ Heads

Stephen Edwards Says Devin Haney’s Fearlessness Is Getting Inside Fighters’ Heads

Trainer Stephen Edwards believes Devin Haney’s willingness to fight dangerous opponents is creating a different kind of pressure on fighters in the current era.

In a post on X, Edwards argued that Haney’s reputation for taking on difficult fights has opponents second-guessing themselves before they even get in the ring. Rather than avoiding risk, Edwards says Haney embraces it, and that attitude alone can make other fighters uncomfortable.

“Random thought: Devin Haney is low-key taking guys’ hearts ❤️ in this era, with his willingness to fight ANYONE,” said Stephen Edwards on X. “That one trait makes fighters in this era a little leery of him because most aren’t willing to. You get the ‘what does he see in me’ energy from them.”

Edwards’ point gets at something that has followed Haney throughout his career. Even critics who question his performances or point to the Ryan Garcia loss still admit Haney has consistently taken difficult fights. He fought Jorge Linares, George Kambosos Jr. twice in Australia, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Regis Prograis, and Garcia during a period where many top fighters were being accused by fans of protecting unbeaten records.

The reaction to Edwards’ post was mixed. Supporters agreed that Haney’s mentality separates him from many fighters in the lightweight and welterweight divisions, especially in an era where negotiations often drag on for years. Critics pushed back by bringing up the lack of an immediate rematch with Garcia and questioning whether Haney would truly fight “anyone” under all conditions.

Edwards appears to be talking less about matchmaking politics and more about mentality. Fighters are used to opponents trying to protect themselves, preserve leverage, or wait for perfect timing. Haney’s willingness to move toward difficult fights instead of away from them changes the dynamic psychologically. If a fighter is eager to face you, some opponents start wondering why.

That may be the bigger point Edwards was making. Haney’s style has always drawn debate, but his appetite for risk has quietly become part of his identity.
