The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a rough spot thanks to their waiting on future Hall of Fame quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers has yet to decide where he’ll play in 2025 and retirement remains an option for him. Meanwhile, the Steelers have put all their eggs in the Rodgers basket, which amounts to a risky bet considering their current lackluster quarterback situation.

With Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard as the only quarterbacks on the roster, Pittsburgh doesn’t have a starter under contract.

While signing him would not solve their need for a starter, Carson Wentz would give the Steelers more competition for their lackluster options. Andy Vasquez of Steelers Wire proposed the signing of Wentz for Pittsburgh if Rodgers decides to call it a career and leave the Steelers high and dry.

“Carson Wentz’s career has been characterized by the highest of highs — and the lowest of lows,” Vasquez wrote. “The former Eagles QB seemed like a lock to become the 2017 MVP before tearing his ACL in Week 14 — and was forced to watch his backup, Nick Foles, lead Philadelphia to the team’s first Super Bowl. Wentz has found himself in a backup role over the past several seasons — but the Steelers could be his shot back into a starting role in 2025.”

Wentz once looked like the future in Philadelphia after an impressive start to his career led to him being an MVP candidate in 2017, and a $128 million contract following that.

However, Wentz’s career was derailed by injuries, and then ineffective play in the wake of those injuries. Since his downfall with the Eagles, Wentz has had a few starting and backup opportunities but has never rebounded.

Pittsburgh would be an intriguing landing spot for Wentz, as we’ve already seen the team’s offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, revive the career of a down-and-out signal-caller in Ryan Tannehill during his days with the Tennessee Titans.

In a run-first offense that utilizes play-action, Wentz would be in a quarterback-friendly system, and he’d have a pair of impressive targets in DK Metcalf and George Pickens.

Seeing as how the league no views him as a backup, Spotrac doesn’t think he’ll garner more than a $1.9 million contract. For that cheap price, Wentz would be worth a swing in Pittsburgh, especially given their dire situation.
