Shakur Stevenson wants to unify with Gary Antuanne Russell at 140 pounds. Russell has talked about letting the fight grow. The trouble is that Russell has done little to make it bigger, and a second belt may not be enough to sell Shakur’s next event.

It is an easy callout to make. Russell holds the WBA title, so a win would add another belt to Shakur’s collection. But Shakur’s WBO mandatory is due in November. If he wants Russell first, his team needs to pursue the fight and get the WBO’s approval. Five words online do not settle either piece of business.
Russell’s talk of letting the fight marinate is harder to understand. He did not look impressive against Alberto Puello or Andy Hiraoka, and he has little presence between fights. He is not drawing casual fans in through interviews, personality, or frequent social media posts. What would another year of waiting do for him?
That matters if Turki Alalshikh is asked to pay for the fight. Russell brings a title and a dangerous inside game, but he is not a name that draws fans by himself. At 140, there are few popular fighters to help sell a major event. A unification sounds good; it still needs an audience. Turki may prefer to put Shakur in with someone fans are eager to see test him.
Russell would have to provide that test in the ring. He has the hands to hurt Shakur up close, but reaching him is the problem. Shakur will use his jab and the full canvas rather than trade in the pocket. If Russell follows instead of cutting off the ring, this could become twelve frustrating rounds for him and for the crowd.
Shakur has named an opponent with a belt. Russell says the fight needs more time. Neither has explained how waiting turns it into a bigger attraction. If they want it, make an offer and see whether anyone is willing to pay for it.
