Sergio Mora Sees ‘Red Flags’ For Abdullah Mason Ahead Of Albert Bell Title Defense

Sergio Mora Sees ‘Red Flags’ For Abdullah Mason Ahead Of Albert Bell Title Defense

Abdullah Mason will make the first defense of his WBO lightweight title on Saturday night, but former world champion Sergio Mora believes the unbeaten 22-year-old is stepping into one of the most dangerous situations a new champion can face.

During the official weigh-in broadcast, Mora pointed to several warning signs that make Mason’s clash with fellow unbeaten Ohio native Albert Bell far more difficult than it may appear on paper.

“Red flags, potential pitfalls,” DAZN commentator Mora said about what Mason is up against. “The things you want to avoid as a champion is someone that you’ve already known, you’re familiar with, a former sparring partner. Of course, I always talk about the hometown curse, the worries of having to sell tickets, of people that you want to invite and the fact that they are so hungry. These are two undefeated fighters. This is what you want as a fan, but not as a champion.”

Bell (28-0, 9 KOs) was originally scheduled to compete in a title eliminator before being elevated into a world title shot after Joe Cordina withdrew from facing Mason. The challenger has spent years around the Mason family, giving him a level of familiarity few opponents possess.

Mora also highlighted Bell’s versatility later in the broadcast, noting the challenger presents a different style than Mason had been preparing for.

“This is a big moment,” Mora said. “Bell can make it really tricky, man. He’s a taller fighter. You got to remember Mason was preparing for a shorter fighter. Bell has a little bit of both. Can come forward, can box on the outside, can make it ugly, make it difficult, and come in with a high confidence.”

The bout also carries added emotion with both fighters representing Ohio. Mason will defend his WBO title in front of his hometown fans in Cleveland, while Bell arrives from nearby Toledo with his unbeaten record intact.

Despite outlining the dangers, Mora still expects Mason to retain his championship. Predicting the fight’s outcome, he said Bell would struggle to keep the champion at range and forecast an action fight in which both men are hurt before Mason emerges victorious.
