Sebastian Fundora Sets Title Defense Against the Man Who Made Him Champion

Sebastian Fundora Sets Title Defense Against the Man Who Made Him Champion

A new date is finally on the books for the WBC junior middleweight title fight between Sebastian Fundora and Keith Thurman, reviving a matchup that feels like a ghost from two years ago.

Back in 2024, Thurman was the one set to face Tim Tszyu before an injury forced him out. Fundora took that opening, stepped in on short notice, and walked away with the WBC and WBO belts. It’s wild to think that Fundora is now defending his title against the very man whose misfortune made him a champion in the first place.

Premier Boxing Champions confirmed the bout will happen on March 28, 2026, at the MGM Grand, airing on Prime Video PPV. This one was supposed to go down last October, but a hand injury for Fundora pushed it back.

Thurman is stepping into this title shot with incredibly thin recent activity. He’s only fought four times since 2017. His only ring time since 2022 was a single appearance in 2025 after nearly three years away. It’s hard to know what ‘One Time’ has left at this stage of his career, because his last opponent, Brock Jarvis, wasn’t good enough to show if Thurman is still a top tier level fighter.

Positioning this as a pay per view headliner is a bold move that focuses more on Thurman’s name than what he’s done in recent years. Although he’s ranked #3 WBC, he’s only fought once since 2019.

While this was delayed, the rest of the 154 pounders didn’t wait around. Interim champs and young contenders have been making moves, making the junior middleweight division one of the hottest in the sport. Fundora’s defense against Thurman feels like a necessary step to settle an old debt, but it definitely pauses the momentum of a division that’s already moving on.

With the injury healed and the date set, Fundora can finally close this chapter. It’s a long standing loose end being tied off, even if the timing and the price tag invite plenty of questions.
