The New Orleans Saints quarterback situation is incredibly uncertain heading into the 2025 NFL Draft. Starting signal-caller Derek Carr is currently dealing with a shoulder injury that could cause him to miss the entire upcoming season, and New Orleans doesn’t have any other starting options at the position on the roster.

New Orleans could use the No.9 overall pick on Carr’s replacement, but ESPN’s Katherine Terrell also believes the Saints could target free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz.

“The Saints hold the ninth pick in the draft and have $27 million in available cap space, although only a few quarterbacks with starting experience remain on the market,” Terrell wrote. “Wentz spent the past season with the Kansas City Chiefs as a backup and hasn’t been a primary starter since his 2021 season with the Indianapolis Colts.”

Wentz has spent the last two seasons as a backup on playoff contenders, as he was the No.2 quarterback behind Patrick Mahomes on the Chiefs in 2024 and backed up Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023.

Though Wentz has started just nine games over the last three seasons and is clearly past his peak, the 32-year-old still has a ton of experience as a starter and could be a solid bridge for New Orleans in 2025.

Wentz could keep the Saints somewhat competitive in a lowly NFC South division and serve as a veteran mentor for the team’s possible rookie quarterback. Additionally, the former top-five pick won’t be expensive to sign, as Spotrac projects Wentz will land a one-year deal worth around $1.9 million.

Selecting a quarterback in Thursday’s draft who could start immediately and develop into the long-term answer would be an ideal scenario for New Orleans, but general manager Mickey Loomis should also look into the possibility of signing a veteran if Carr is unable to play in 2025, such as Carson Wentz.
