Ryan Garcia says Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero has no excuse to stay inactive after beating him earlier this year, arguing that champions should be moving quickly instead of waiting around for payday fights.
Garcia made the comments while discussing the mistakes he believes he made going into his loss to Rolly, admitting he accepted the fight while physically compromised and motivated by money.
“I wasn’t in a good place at all. I was extremely overweight. Was coming off a year layoff. My body just was off, and I just took the money because, you know, I needed it,” Ryan said to Complex News.
“I already knew in sparring, trying to train, and everything. I already had my doubts. It’s one of those things where you made a commitment, you signed the paper, you got to do it.”
Ryan still gave Rolly credit for capitalizing on the opportunity, but he also questioned why the WBA welterweight champion has yet to return to the ring.
“No knock on Rollys. I’m happy that he got a win. Now let’s see what he could do with it. It’s one thing to win. It’s another thing how far can you go with your own success,” said Ryan.
“I feel I’ve already made another step forward. I fought Mario Barrios. He hasn’t fought yet. What’s your hold up? You’re a world champion. Let’s get it going.”
Ryan also revealed that his expected September 12 fight against Conor Benn in Las Vegas still has unresolved details despite widespread reports that the matchup is close to finalized.
Garcia appears determined to stay active after capturing the WBC welterweight title from Barrios, and his remarks suggested he wants the division to move faster than it has over the last year.
