Going into the Vasiliy Lomachenko clash back in 2020, Teofimo Lopez carried only a single world-level victory on his resume against Richard Commey. Lomachenko walked to the ring smaller, older, and nursing a damaged right shoulder that bothered him across all twelve rounds. Every physical edge belonged to Teofimo, who enjoyed youth, superior size, and pristine health, yet he still almost gave the bout away the moment Lomachenko pressed the gas in the second half. That night provided the ideal setup for an upset rather than genuine confirmation of an elite talent.
He can still shine when everything is arranged for him. Josh Taylor came forward and gave Teofimo the openings he wanted. Sandor Martin, Jamaine Ortiz and Shakur Stevenson made him create his own offense, and he had few answers. Teofimo says he has taken more control of his camp for the Romero fight.
“I’m taking more control of the fight plan and my training camp,” Teofimo said to Yahoo Sports. “It’s everything about what the fighter is best at, and I do not want to overtrain and leave everything in the gym.”
The same trust issues follow Rolly. He looked confused against Ismael Barroso and Isaac Cruz, then returned with a disciplined performance against Ryan Garcia. Was that the beginning of a better Rolly, or merely his good day at the office?
Both are boxing misfits, and that is why promoters continue giving them major opportunities. Fans watch because either man can turn an ordinary fight into something strange.
Teofimo gets frustrated, loses confidence, and mentally falls apart when a fight is not going his way. Rolly swings wildly and fights recklessly, as if he has no sense. Picking between them feels like flipping a coin that might land on its edge. Their unreliability is part of the attraction.
That is tonight’s spectacle: two fighters with enough ability to win and enough instability to ruin their own night. Either can look brilliant for a few rounds, then lose control without warning. The winner may simply be the man who holds himself together the longest.
