Robeisy Ramirez Challenges WBC Over Canceled Uzbekistan Fight

Robeisy Ramirez Challenges WBC Over Canceled Uzbekistan Fight

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez’s return to the ring was canceled at the last minute on Friday, and the former world champion is now publicly accusing the WBC and promoter Pat Ricco of mishandling his medical clearance.

Ramirez (14-3, 9 KOs) was scheduled to face Asror Vohidov in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in what would have been his first fight since December 2024. That bout ended in a sixth-round stoppage loss to Rafael Espinoza after Ramirez suffered an eye injury.

Instead of ending a two-year absence, Robeisy found himself posting a series of messages on social media directed at the WBC and its president, Mauricio Sulaiman.

At 9pm yesterday I was at emergency room getting the MRI. WBC and promoter told me that what I got was a CT Scan. This is not true. Regardless, I got an MRI again today that I paid for. The @WBCBoxing and Pat Ricco refused to accept it because it was “late” by a couple hours. https://t.co/NYQDBLDpUO

Ramirez also disputed the explanation that led to the cancellation and challenged Sulaiman to review the situation personally.

“Tonight I was supposed to be fighting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Instead, my fight got canceled over a ‘supposedly’ late MRI. I made my position clear to Mauricio in our call with my attorney,” said Robeisy.

“Mauricio, you say you look out for fighters. Prove it. Do right by boxing. Do right by me.”

The cancellation leaves Robeisy’s future uncertain after a lengthy layoff. The 32-year-old Cuban standout has been inactive since his loss to Rafael Espinoza and is no longer signed with Top Rank. Despite his amateur pedigree and former world-title status, Ramirez has yet to secure a deal with one of boxing’s major promotional companies.

Robeisy’s public appeal now puts the focus on whether the WBC responds to his allegations and whether an explanation will be provided for the cancellation that cost him his long-awaited return.
