Argentine lightweight Alan Chaves will defend his WBO Latino lightweight title against Eridson Garcia on September 4 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on the undercard of Andy Ruiz Jr.’s return against Damian Knyba.
The 25-year-old Chaves is one of Matchroom’s rising prospects at 135 pounds. He remains several steps away from landing fights against the division’s established contenders, but each outing gives him another opportunity to strengthen his position in the rankings.
Chaves (22-0, 19 KOs) comes into the fight after stopping Miguel Madueno in April with a crushing left hook in the third round that became one of the year’s most discussed knockouts. He has stopped his last five opponents. Chaves enters the bout ranked No. 2 by the WBO, No. 4 by the IBF and No. 7 by the WBC.
“I appreciate Eridson accepting the fight when others didn’t,” said Chaves. “He earned the opportunity. Now he has to earn the victory. That’s a much harder task.”
“Alan Chaves is undefeated, dangerous and coming off a knockout everyone is talking about,” Garcia said. “Good, that means there will be no excuses when I beat him. He has never faced anyone with my experience or the ability to take away his weapons.
“They call him ‘Veneno,’ but I’m bringing the antidote, and I’m coming to hand him the first loss of his career.”
Garcia hopes to rebound after a ten-round defeat in April snapped his six-fight winning streak. He can score the biggest victory of his career by upsetting Chaves. That result would strengthen his standing in the lightweight rankings.
The fight joins a September 4 card headlined by Ruiz’s comeback against Knyba. Vito Mielnicki Jr. meets Austin Williams in the co-feature. Zaquin Moses, Dennis Thompson and Brooke Mullen are also scheduled to appear. The event will air on TNT, truTV and DAZN in the United States. DAZN will also carry the broadcast internationally.
