Abdullah Mason’s dramatic comeback stoppage of Albert Bell earned him a jump in The Ring’s latest lightweight rankings, but not everyone on Inside the Ring agreed he has done enough to move ahead of Andy Cruz.
“In my view, if I just have to rank how good everyone is, I’m going Shakur one, Muratalla two, Andy Cruz three, Mason four,” Kellerman said on InsideRingShow.
Mike Coppinger supported that position, pointing to the level of competition each fighter has faced.
“I think people forget Andy Cruz and Muratalla was an incredibly close fight,” Coppinger said.
The discussion highlighted one of boxing’s longstanding ranking debates: should a fighter be rewarded more for winning against lesser opposition or for remaining competitive in defeat against one of the division’s elite?
Mason ultimately stopped Bell in the 12th round, but the performance raised questions. Bell controlled much of the early action before fading in the second half, and the ending drew criticism after the referee halted the bout without giving Bell the opportunity to beat the count. Even the panel agreed the stoppage would continue to be debated.
By comparison, Cruz dropped a decision to Muratalla in a fight many viewed as a legitimate world-class test. While the Cuban suffered his first professional defeat, Kellerman and Coppinger argued that the caliber of opposition still matters when evaluating where fighters belong.
The debate is unlikely to end anytime soon. Mason’s fan-friendly style and knockout power continue to make him one of boxing’s fastest-rising prospects, but his latest performance also left questions about how he would fare against the division’s best technicians.
The Ring has answered one question by placing Mason ahead of Cruz. Whether the lightweight division agrees with that assessment will likely depend on what both fighters do next.
